There are so many new and even terms that you may not have a clear picture of and the same goes with the word ‘handset’. We agree that the term is not extensively used today as it would have been before the invention of mobile phones only because these were used mainly then.
Handset, a known word for some but unknown for many. Yes, it is not every day that you hear someone using this term but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t useful today. You must know what importance it holds even if we cannot make use of it now. So, let us give you an idea about handsets.
What Does The Term Handset Mean?
To begin with, handset is used to refer to that part of telephones which are held over the ears while talking. These were also called as receivers since they consisted of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter acted like a microphone that is inbuilt in cell phones today and could transmit the speaker`s audio signal. A receiver acted as a speaker which let us hear what the other person was saying. You might recall that they were two ends on these handsets. So, the one you hold close to your mouth has the transmitter and the other over your ear has the receiver.
Talking about the times when telephones were used you would also remember that sometimes the person taking on the phone had to hold the telephone near the mouth to be audible at the other end. Yes, you recalled it right. These types of telephones were called candlestick telephones and their handset didn’t have a transmitter. However, one similarity between the two is that they were sued only until the invention of mobile phones since you could not carry it around.
Another important thing to learn about these handsets is that originally, they referred to the second component of the telephone but today they are used in a more generic sense. Yes, it could also refer to a part of any of the wired or wireless communication devices that could be held and used for reaching out to the listener on the phone. Sometimes, they are often referred to as mobile phones or cell phones.
