Invention Of Mobile Phones: From 0G To 4G

Our day starts and ends with mobile phones; seeing this, I think what would be our life without the invention of mobile phones. Perhaps, the invention of mobile phones is the latest discovery in humankind. To explore that, let us trace the history of the invention of mobile phones. Let us see how we got evolved from a simple telephone to a sophisticated mobile which has changed our lives drastically.

History Of Mobile Phones At The Initial Stage (0G)

In 1908 there was a discovery of wireless network technology in Kentucky, USA. This discovery was perhaps the first milestone in the history of the invention of mobile phones. Another milestone in this regard was during the 1940s when some technicians at American Telephone and Telegraph company conglomerate discovered some radio styled devices, by which two people can talk by not being connected through wire. In 1946, we had one of the earliest back to back calls made in Chicago. It is notable that, although China is the largest producer of mobile and related devices, the USA was forefront in its discovery process.

Invention of mobile phones

The process of the invention of mobile phones achieved a feat in 1973. Motorola, in April 1973, became the first company to start assembly-line styled mass production of mobile phones. So the long-standing dream of people to talk outside their home spaces seemed to fulfil for the first time. By the time the European countries also began to take some lead in mobile technology development. The Nordic and Scandanavian countries showed more interest in this context.

In 1987, the scientists were able to develop long envisaged trans-boarder mobile technology. In 1992, we had the world’s first Short Message Service, what we call it as SMS, which gave a new direction in the entire history of the invention of mobile phones. ‘Merry Christmas’ was the first SMS and was sent to Vodafone director Richard Jarvis.

Beginning Of 1G Mobile Phones

The discovery and initial development of the 0G mobile phones took place in the USA and Europe. Its better version, the 1G mobile phone technology came from Japan. The Nippon Telegraph and Telephone achieved a breakthrough with the development of the first generation mobile communication system. The main distinction with the 0G and 1G was the introduction of cellular technology. The operators divided each area into units called ‘cells’. Each of this cell use to have a base station which is further connected to telephone networks also. Although the communication with this technology was with full of disturbances; it was significant progress in the history of the invention of mobile phones.

2G Technology: A Major Improvement

Invention of mobile phones

The 2G technology wanted to make some improvements over the former 1G. In Finland, a new technology developed, which aimed to solve the bug fixes of the earlier one. It also introduced new techniques like sending digital pictures and all. The spectrum of the radio waves increase to carter these new demands. The data transmission speed got increased multifold, from 3-4 kbps to 14-15 kbps.

By the time, mobile technology also reached the lower-income countries like India, China and Pakistan. Although these countries weren’t prosperous enough to purchase a mobile phone; as they are populous, two things turned in there favour. Firstly, mobile companies thought to use these countries as a production site. The companies would use cheap labour to produce less costly mobiles which would find a place in the market. Secondly, when a large population was going to use mobile phones, it would be more economically viable to reduce tariffs. Even today, the lower-income country like India has one of the lowest tariff rates.

2.5G Technology: A Slight Improvement

Invention of mobile phones

The 2G, although a breakthrough, couldn’t handle big graphics like videos. To garner this technology, the designers introduced a technology which can sustain the internet speed of 50-60 kbps. Further, voice quality also improved. Edge technology proved to be an even more significant game-changer in the telephone movement. Introduced in 2003, this aimed a near 3G state of network connection.

The Most Surpassing Breakthrough: 3G technology

The mobile companies developed CDMA design which was supposed to be for faster browsing, quicker downloads and features like video call, etc. The older smartphones used to have the 3G technology itself. As I have experienced a transition from 2G to 3G, it was a matter of joy as we experienced a new speed over which could even watch a movie!

Other significant features like video-conference, encrypting technology, etc. were other additions. I still remember the H+ symbol, which was as a sign of prestige before 2-3 years. Still, there was a principal problem that it was highly costly. It was also okay for video calls but yet not for video conferences.

Latest Technology: The 4G Girl

We all remember our excitement before the launch of Airtel 4G girl! Today we all realise the importance of fast internet technology in the light of ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In many countries, by the launch of 4G technology, many parts of the world have cheapened the data tariff rates. So the speciality of the 4G technology is more people have got under the internet umbrella now. This technology fulfils a lot of our domestic requirements. However, still, the world is sphere to develop 5G technology, and it is a matter of great interest in what it will have further!

So this was the history of the invention of mobile phones from 0G to 4G and also much-anticipated 5G in the future. One thing we can observe in the development of the history of the invention of mobile phones is that in the start, the advancements happened very slow, but now we have daily new technology related to mobile which are changing our lives drastically. This was a short account of what my perspective is on the invention of mobile phones.
